The Powerhouse In an effort to stop water from the Paraná from flowing over the dam, eighteen enormous concrete pipes called penstocks were lined up vertically against the 5-mile (8-kilometer) dam. At the bottom of each penstock was a turbine and a generator. These eighteen generators formed the powerhouse that would create the electricity. Each penstock would channel water from the reservoir to the powerhouse. The flowing water would spin the turbines, driving the generators to create electricity.
