The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the reader to these techniques and to describe in detail some of their applications. In these applications, emphasis is placed on the use of portable near-infrared (IR) excitation sources, including diode and diode-laser-pumped Nd:YAG lasers, because of the potential of developing a field-portable Raman spectrometer.
